Study of foliar fertilization in the treatment of nutritional disorders and as a strategy for increasing performances and quality of the citric fruits.

That Line of research has been recently opened to treat the problems of field associated to nutritional disorders that can be corrected across treatments of foliar fertilization.

Nowadays, we are working on a project called: "Optimisation of the Quality of fruits in the Nova mandarin orange tree on Macrophylla rootstock, across foliar applications of nutritional complements." That project has as origin the problems of field of Nova mandarin.

Nova mandarin has got good conditions of size, colour, texture and flavour, conditions that with the absence of seeds and problems in the continuity of production, as long as a good compatibility with the patterns resisting shyness, have determined that it is, nowadays, one of the mandarin framing with more expansion.  Nevertheless, Nova mandarin usually suffers from two kind of alteration during the development of the fruit and, if they are not solved, they will stop the good actual expansion of farming.

Those alterations are:

  • Splitting. This alteration, common to the one from which suffer Fortune and Marisol mandarins, is particularly generalised in the Nova mandarin, in which presents really high intensities, subtracting economic value to the production. The origin of this affection is not clear, and the treatments with salts of potassium and calcium to stop it donīt give usually positive results.
  • If because of market interests the harvest of mandarin is delayed, it can develop circular crevices around the chalice, that can affect the totality of the fruits and can degenerate in water patches, and so its value in the market will be subtracted. The mandarin will also loose juice and acidity.

The goal of these Projects is to clarify the cause and mechanisms of development of those alterations, and avoid them optimising the final quality of the fruits, across foliar applications of nutritional complements.
